This year, Weldon Elementary will be using the Accelerated Reader Program to assist in gauging students reading comprehension. Student reading levels are determined using the Renaissance STAR program. From this evaluation, the ZPD (zone of proximal development) is determined for each student. The students are then tasked with reading self selected Accelerated Reading books that are within their reading range. At the completion of their book, they are expected to complete an Accelerated Reader test for that title. Students can access the AR program (Renaissance Place) from the school's website, under the student resources and student links tabs. To log-in, they should enter their first initial and last name as the username and their lunch number as the password. If the student successfully completes the test, they are awarded a select number of AR Points.

The chart below will be utilized in the library to assist students in selecting books that are on their Accelerated Reader level. Each student will work with their classroom teacher to determine a reading goal for the nine week period. At the conclusion of each grading period, students who meet their reading goal will be eligible for various reading incentives. Listed below are some of the potential incentives that will be offered this school year.

• Popsicle/ Popcorn Party
• Bingo Bash
• Ice Cream Sundae Bar
• Prize Drawings (For every 5 AR points that a student earns, they will receive a ticket. They will then be allowed to enter their tickets into multiple prize drawings at the end of the school year.)
